In what promises to be one of the biggest MMORPG games (Massively Multiple Player Online Role Playing Game), the Lord of the Rings franchise is set to enter the Arena. It promises groundbreaking graphics and the most realistic opportunity to explore and live in Middle Earth possible with today's wide-area technology.
Known as LOTRO for short, the Lord of the Rings online game is set in the Middle Earth of J.R.R. Tolkein's famous Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The MMORPG game has been developed by Turbine, Inc. jointly with Vivendi Universal Games online. The first installment of the game is called "Shadows of Angmar".
Presently the LOTRO online game has not "officially" been released. However you can play the "beta" release by signing on to the LOTRO.com official website and clicking on the sign up button. With 300,000 pre-release players, it is widely expected Lord of the Rings Online - LOTRO - will have several million players by the close of its first year in wide release. Eventually it is expected to rival Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy's $3 billion via subscriptions and software sales.
The Shadows of Angmar Lord of the Rings Online game seeks to distinguish itself from other MMORPG games by featuring lush landscapes, hobbit villages, evil armies and the familiar characters of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy and the hit movies. Because the characters and scenes are familiar to a vast audience already LOTRO is likely to expand the universe of online game players. Perhaps cannon fodder for the experienced players, but watch out they will learn fast! Like the World of Warcraft with 8 million players, LOTRO provides a huge world of rich context and color that can be explored for days, weeks and months.
For the first installment of the Lord of the Rings online game (LOTRO), Turbine has created Shadows of Angmar - set in Tolkien's Middle Earth at the time of Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring after Frodo Baggins and his LOTRO crew have left the Shire.
In the beta release, there are 7 playable classes and 4 different races although expansion is expected.
The playable classes of people of the Lord of the Rings Online game (LOTRO) include:
- Burglar
- Captain
- Champion
- Guardian
- Hunter
- Lore-Master
- Minstrel
Yet, the most fascinating aspect of the Lord Of The Rings Online game is the races. These LOTRO races are modelled after J.R.R. Tolkein's fascinating species of people:
- Hobbits - of course!
- Elf
- Dwarf
- Man - human beings.
Each character is outfitted with potential armor, weapons and skills.
Like other MMORPG's the Lord of the Rings Online game will feature Player on Player (PvP) combat, but the emphasis is on Player versus Environment (PvE) combat and storyline adventures. Raids will have multiple players up to 24, but expected to rise as the Lord of the Rings Online game LOTRO attracts more players. There also are crafting professions and gathering professions.
